This is my updated iPhone design.
Thanks for all of your previous responses. It has been remarkably overwhelming, in a good way. :)
So why the update?...
When I saw the LG Versa's Game Controller something clicked. I now believe a duel-sliding front face would be the most obvious and elegant solution to integrating game controls to the iPhone.
I have enjoyed other peoples attempts on how to do this, but (no offense, Jesus) I think this has nailed it. :)
Two quick notes on the design...
The keyboard has changed!
The new keyboard is not ideal, but it at least uses the entire length of the phone now. I think it's too complicated and looks ugly, but as far as physical keyboards for phones go, this isn't too shabby. And best of all, you can hide it away when you're done with it. :) (If you know of better physical keyboard designs feel free to send them to me)
The camera still zooms out!
While I would prefer no moving parts, or at least no exterior moving parts, I think it's important to put the best camera possible camera into the phone as you can. This, unfortunately still means a 3xzoom and lens shutters to cover the lens when its inactive. These features all use moving parts. If you have any ideas to improve this, be it leaps in technology or just clever work arounds, I'd love to hear them. :) (To pre-empt, I loathe with a passion the manual covers that slide across camera lenses. Tacky!)
Lastly, I must say that the reaction to the last iPhone ELITE image was nothing short of spectacular. Thanks so much to everyone who intelligently contributed in the comments section. Whether you enjoyed it or despised it, your insightful comments were much appreciated. Thanks!

Great idea mate! Maybe you can detach the camera completely and make it an accessory? The iPhone will be thinner this way and you could place the camera below like an accessory.
fantastic idea always thought it is what sony needed to do
the camera would need to have xenon flash as this makes pictures so much better. could also be like some of the digital cameras which have optical zooms but the camera doesnt stick out.
Camera could zoom by internal len's moving further inwards rather than external lens moving outwards, create's same zoom effect, you may be able to get a 5x optical zoom out of it without it protruding...
You could theoretically create an external case that would make this, however it would have to include the Camera aswell and I doubt that Apple would ever allow it...
Case would include the dual slider keyboard with dual screen tilt, Camera with 5x optical zoom, external battery, more powerful speakers, stereo mic, FM/Digital Radio tuner...
Any other important features I've missed?
Great design! I was just wondering what the spec are for the device (if you made any) such as screen size, actual phone size, etc or is it all the same hardware (except for what is on the picture) but with a larger screen? I'd love to have one of these!
well I really really liked the ELITE it's awesome!! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOL but one thing: how can u make the double slide if the keyboard takes the full slide board?? but still cool!!!!
I'll admit I had my doubts about your first "Iphone Elite", but this is amazing. If apple ever came out with this product I would drop the last 1 and 1/2 years of my Verizon contract, throw out my LG voyager (bleh) and go buy this without a second thought. The only thing I would wonder about is could you add external (higher quality) speakers to the slide out keyboard? They would of course not be used if the keyboard was slided? slid? in. Though I'm only a 9th grader and don't really know a lot about this kinda stuff. IMO the current speakers on the iphone suck.
It doesnt seem like it would be possible to have the keyboard:
1) Slide in 2 directions
2)Keep in place when you need it to
3) Have enough room for the keyboard and game controler.
Hey Mat,
Nice design, fluid and visually appealing.
Though I want one thing more from your designs: realism.
iPhone EITE: The dual-slide.
Your mechanism looks impossible to build given the space. The total slide area you can extract is 29mm (i calculated based on n95). So it would cover for the keyboard or both but one would be left out.
PSP: The trackpad keyboard.
Awesome idea, but it would be too impractable. Firstly, the "buttons" at the sides wouldn't be usable/practical. Secondly, the functionality would be quite low cause trackpads have a low accuracy per mm2. A resistive touchscreen may just pull it off (accuracy wise). And the res-touch can provide the mouse alternative. But it will become pointless. Why? It would lose the multi-touch advantage, tactile responsiveness of a keyboard, and the touchpad responsiveness of mouse. So its a trade-off between tactile and mousability.
I want to send you my designs, once ive finished the OS looks.
It is not a design per-se, but blueprints to build an Omnia. I have scaled everything to be do-able. Its not visually enhanced, but have images of each angle for anyone to grasp. Will be looking forward to sending you these to get your feedback.
In the meantime, keep up the hard work kiwi!
good ideas! except on the game part of it you have it playing little big planet which is ps3 exclusive and xbox buttons on it... i believe apple will never team up with xbox seeing as how xbox is a microsoft product. if this were ever real it would probabl be x, square, triangle, and circle :)
i love this idea!!!!!!! WOW!!!!! if the iphone was like this, i wouldnt think twice. its wonderful!!
has steve jobs agreed to this yet? he has to!
Maybe the keyboard could have back lit E-Ink keys, so the configuration and language could be changed whenever. Samsung has already accomplished something similar with the Alias 2.
I'd leave out the external keyboard and just use the original one on the screen with added swipeselection which is awesome. Keep the gamepad only as a slide out external piece. Use an internal zoom option for the internal camera so you don't have a camera physically sliding out, but would definitely have to upgrade to a higher pixel camera. I wouldn't worry about the thickness of the phone that much. I know thin is in but a lot of people still enjoy a thick heftiness to a phone with the rounded edges. It just feels better in the hand. Better grip and won't feel like it's going to slip right out of your hand. Also on the back your could make just the center a flat piece so that when its lying on the table it sits flat and stable. Just some ideas, but it looks like a great concept.also shouldn't be hard upgrading the glass and incorporating a retina/high def screen. Sorry that's all. Keep up the great work, I have a few ideas for concepts myself though sadly I don't have the know how or resources to make them come to be just yet. If there are those of you that do and are willing to help I would love a group to work with.
